Biotechnology is the application of scientific and technical advances in life science to develop commercial products. It is an interdisciplinary science involving biological sciences (biochemistry, genetics, microbiology, molecular biology) and technology (chemical, mechanical, electronic, information technology, bio-robotics). Biotechnology is emerging as the fastest growing knowledge-based sector. India has the potential of becoming a global player in the biotechnology area. There is not only a need for the skilled workers in huge quantities, but thrust should also be on quality education to cater the specialized requirements of this sector both in research and industry. We have natural strengths such as manpower, well-developed scientific infrastructure, diverse agro-climate and bio-resources to take this sector forward.
